At This Time

One of the great phrases in the language is: "At this time."

In our dynamic world, certainty may be desirable but it simply is not attainable. So you can expect to experience -- and make -- shifts in direction, changes of heart, and even dramatic 180-degree turns.

Yes, some may well accuse you of indecision, lack of resolve, and even "flip-flopping."

But ardently sticking to a course that is no longer relevant for the sake of consistency, or the appearance of commitment, is no virtue. To the contrary, it may show a slavish, debilitating mindlessness. Not exactly the stuff of legendary leadership.

ACTION to Take

• Accept the tenuousness of today's world. Plan to make dramatic changes in course without apology or regret. In fact, appreciate that such alterations can demonstrate mature, courageous leadership.
  
  
• Use the phrase "at this time" liberally. Repeat it often to signal to yourself and those around you that even the well considered and deliberated decisions and plans you make are subject to radical revision.
  
  
• Maintain a mindset that is open, aware, and flexible. Solicit, contemplate, and appreciate the input of others -- especially those with perspectives that differ from your own.
  
  
• Reserve -- and exercise -- the right to change your mind when that really is the best course at this time.
